Platanthera cristata (Michaux) Lindley. Subgenus: Blephariglottis. Section: Blephariglottis. Crested Fringed Orchid, Golden Fringed Orchid. Phen: Jun-Sep. Hab: Pine savannas, bogs, moist roadsides. Dist: P. cristata is more limited to the Coastal Plain than the related P. ciliaris, ranging from s. MA south to FL and west to e. TX, and also inland in KY, TN, AR, SC, and NC.

Intro: Erect perennial of savannas, bogs, seepage slopes and moist powerline clearings and roadsides.

Stems: Stem unbranched, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, sessile, lance-shaped, 2-8 in. long (reduced upward), with parallel veins and a central crease (keeled), smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in a dense, somewhat cone-shaped terminal raceme with leafy bracts; orange; bilaterally symmetric; with 2 upper petals and a sepal forming a hood, 2 additional wing-like sepals, and a deeply fringed lip-petal bearing a mostly straight spur no more than 1/2 in. long.

Fruits: Fruit a semi-erect, ellipsoid capsule.
