Portulaca pilosa Linnaeus. Common name: Kiss-me-quick. Phenology: May-Oct. Habitat: Disturbed sandy soils, calcareous glades. Distribution: NC south to s. FL, west to NM, north in the interior to c. TN, AR, and OK, and in Central America; the native range perhaps obscure.

Stems: Stems fleshy, often reddish, branching, with tufts of coarse hairs at leaf nodes and beneath flowers.
Leaves: Leaves mostly alternate, linear to lance-shaped, to 3 in. long, fleshy-succulent, sometimes tinged with red.

Flowers: Flowers usually solitary in leaf axils, pink or magenta, 1/4-1/2 in. wide, consisting of 5-7 oval petals with scalloped tips and many yellow stamens; petals drop after a few hours.
