not marked as a favorite taxon Pyrrhopappus carolinianus (Walter) A.P. de Candolle. Common name: False-dandelion, Carolina Desert-chicory. Phenology: Mar-Jun (and sometimes later). Habitat: Dry and moist forests, roadsides, meadows, fields. Distribution: DE, se. PA, and MD south to c. peninsular FL, west to IL, MO, and TX; the pre-Columbian range is uncertain.

Horticultural Information

Intro: Erect to ascending annual/biennial of both dry and moist forests, roadsides, meadows and fields.

Stems: Stems mostly leafless, with a few branches, mostly smooth, leaking milky sap when broken.

Leaves: Leaves basal and (smaller) alternate on stem, petiolate, oblong-lance-shaped, to 10 in. long, toothed or irregularly lobed, mostly smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) solitary at tips of stems and branches; heads to 2 1/2 in. wide, consisting of many lemon yellow ray florets with squared-off, toothed tips (no disk florets); erect in the center are many slender, yellow styles, each enclosed by a sleeve of dark stamens.

Fruits: Fruit a tufted achene.
