Quercus prinoides Willdenow. Subgenus: Quercus. Section: Quercus. Subsection: Prinoideae. Common name: Dwarf Chinquapin Oak. Phenology: Apr; Aug-Sep (of the same year). Habitat: Xeric upland glades, barrens, and woodlands, on clay soils derived from mafic, ultramafic, or calcareous rocks or in sandy acidic soils, generally in sites which naturally burned rather frequently. Distribution: MA and s. MI south to NC, Panhandle FL (L. Anderson, pers.comm., 2021), OK, and TX.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Other Comments: Fire suppression in the sites where this rare stoloniferous shrub oak occurs has nearly or entirely extirpated it from much of our area.
