Horticultural Information
Intro: Erect to ascending perennial of bottomland forests, cove forests, swamps and mesic slope forests.
Stems: Stems 1-3, flexible, simple or few-branched, hairy; flower stalks also finely hairy.
Leaves: Leaves basal and alternate on stem, petiolate (reduced petioles upward), kidney-shaped to broadly oval, to 4 1/2 in. long and wide, divided into 3 toothed or further lobed, diamond- to oval-shaped segments; upper surface dull green with deeply etched veins, lower surface shiny green; margins long-hairy.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers in small, stalked clusters of 2-5 from upper leaf axils; yellow and green, 1/4-1/2 in. wide, with 5 tiny, narrowly oblong, glossy yellow petals; 5 longer, whitish-green, hairy, recurved petals; and a central green, compound ovary with a ring of stamens.
Fruits: Fruit a rounded cluster of flattened achenes with hook-beaked tips.
