Rhynchospora corniculata (Lamarck) A. Gray. Common name: Short-bristled Horned Beaksedge. Phenology: Jul-Sep. Habitat: Pondcypress savannas in Carolina bays, swamp forests, other wetlands. Distribution: Sometimes divided into two varieties: var. corniculata ranges from DE south to FL and west to LA, extending north into KY and MO; also in the West Indies.
ID notes: This is one of our most robust beaksedge species, generally 1-1.5 m tall, with several stems forming a clump; its perigynia have long beaks. The inflorescence is open, but not as open as in R. careyana or R. inundata, and much more open than any R. macrostachya. It is told from the first two by the lack of horizontal rhizomes, and from the last by bristles much shorter than the seed (vs. much longer in that species).
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: Var. interior, probably not worth recognition, is distinguished by a shorter and narrower achene, the summit barely broader than the base of the tubercle, and occurs in the Mississippi drainage.
