Rhynchospora glomerata (Linnaeus) Vahl. Common name: Clustered Beaksedge. Phenology: Jul-Sep. Habitat: Pine savannas, bogs, acidic seeps inland, other wet habitats. Distribution: S. New Jersey south to ne. Florida, Florida Panhandle, and west to e. Texas, and inland in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Kansas.
ID notes: A rather common beaksedge that should be learned by field botanists as a comparison point for other species. It is a coarser plant than R. capitellata, its spikelet clusters larger and tending to arch outward and often causing the stem to lean. Its achenes are much longer (1.5-2.0 mm vs. 1.2-1.5). In the West Gulf Coastal Plain, its distribution overlaps with that of R. angusta; see Rhynchospora key D.
