Rhynchospora megalocarpa A. Gray. Common name: Sandhill Beaksedge. Phenology: Jun-Aug. Habitat: Xeric longleaf pine sandhills, Florida scrub. Distribution: Se. NC south to s. FL, west to MS.
ID notes: Rhynchospora megalocarpa is virtually unmistakable, with its broad, coarse leaves, thick stems 9-16 dm tall, large achenes (4-5 mm long), and dry habitat. The many basal leaves look at a distance like some bulrush (Scirpus). It is so much more robust a plant than R. grayi that there should be no confusion; see that species account for distinguishing details.
