ID notes: The small and generally spherical heads of Rhynchospora microcephala are an excellent field character; the chestnut to brown heads are 2-5 and are well-separated. R. cephalantha is closely similar, but it has larger heads and the seeds are larger (3.5-4 mm long vs. 2.5-3 mm long in R. microcephala).
