Rotala ramosior (Linnaeus) Koehne. Common name: Toothcup. Phenology: Jun-Oct. Habitat: Marshes, ditches, exposed drawdown muds and silts. Distribution: VT, NY, ON, MI, WI, MN, SD, MT, and BC, south to s. FL, TX, AZ, CA, and south through Mexico to Central America and South America; West Indies.

Stems: Stems 4-angled, freely branched (sometimes unbranced), smooth, turning red over time.
Leaves: Leaves opposite or whorled, linear-oblong, petiolate, 1/2-1 1/4 in. long, smooth.

Flowers: Flowers solitary in leaf axils, red, to 1/4 in. long, tubular with 4 minute, white-pink corolla lobes.
Fruits: Fruit a rounded, 4-sectioned capsule tipped with 4 teeth.
