Intro: Erect annual of dry to moist pinelands, wet pine savannas, sandhills and other dry woodlands.
Stems: Stems bushy-branched and smooth or finely hairy.
Leaves: Leaves opposite, short-petiolate to sessile, to 3/4 in. long, pinnately divided into many narrow needle-like segments, pale green and often red-tinged.

Flowers: Flowers in leafy racemes terminating branches, pale yellow, about â…“ in. wide, bilaterally symmetric, consisting of a short corolla tube with 5 spreading, unequal lobes (usually with a red triangle at the base of each of the 3 lower lobes, and splotchy red on the other 2 lobes), a bell-shaped-tubular calyx with 5 lobes and 4 protruding stamens. Buds and outside of petals lack hairs.
Fruits: Fruit an urn- or pear-shaped capsule.
Comments: Parasitic on the roots of pine trees.
