Smilax glauca Walter. clade: B5. Whiteleaf Greenbriar, Wild Sarsaparilla. Phen: Late Apr-early Jun; Sep-Nov (and persisting). Hab: Dry to mesic forests and woodlands, bottomland and riparian forests, bluffs, hardwood flatwoods, pine flatwoods, prairies, old fields, fencerows, pastures, roadsides, uncommon in wetlands. One of the most ubiquitous plants in our region, and remarkable for its ecological amplitude. Dist: NJ, c. PA, OH, IN, MO, and KS, south to c. peninsular FL and TX, and also in e. and s. Mexico.
ID notes: A distinctive Smilax with pale (glaucous) lower leaf surface.
