Intro: Erect, rhizomatous perennial of pocosins, swamp forests, wet savannas, wet pine flatwoods, maritime forests; often forms dense patches via stolons and rhizomes.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, sessile with somewhat clasping bases, crowded and ascending, narrowly elliptic, to 4 in. long, entire to vaguely toothed, rough-hairy above and hairy beneath.
