not marked as a favorite taxon Solidago patula Muhlenberg ex Willdenow. Common name: Northern Roughleaf Goldenrod. Phenology: Aug-Sep (-Oct). Habitat: Bogs, seepages over mafic rocks, grassy balds (as Whitetop Mountain). Distribution: NH, VT, NY, s. ON, MI and WI south to w. VA, w. NC, nc. GA, c. TN, w. TN, and se. MO. Coastal Plain records (except northwards, in DE, NJ, and NY) represent misidentifications of S. salicina.

Subgenus: Pleiactila. Section: Argutae. Subsection: Patulae.

ID notes: The broad basal leaves, saturated wetland habitat, and finely but definitely scabrous upper leaf surface are distinctive.

Taxonomy Comments: Semple, Tong, & Pastolero (2012) have clarified the taxonomy, distribution, and nomenclature of this and S. salicina.

Intro: Erect, rhizomatous perennial of bogs, seepages over mafic rocks and grassy balds.

Stems: Stems sharply 4-angled (sometimes with wings), unbranched (except in inflorescence), smooth.

Leaves: Leaves basal and alternate on stem, petiolate (some winged), elliptic, 4-12 in. long (becoming lance-shaped and smaller above), sharply toothed (uppermost leaves may be entire), rough above and smooth beneath; lower leaves may wither by bloom time.

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) in an open terminal panicle, mostly on 1 side of the arching-ascending branches; heads less than 1/4 in. wide, consisting of 5-12 small, yellow ray florets encircling a center disk of 5-15 tiny, yellow tubular florets.
