Distribution: NS and QC west to MN, south to NY, n. IN, s. MI, and WI, and on the Coastal Plain south to s. FL, west to se. TX; also in s. Mexico (ROO, TAB), the West Indies, and Central America.

Stems: Stems underwater, with wiry flowering scapes rising above water surface.

Leaves: Leaves underwater, opposite or in whorls of 5-7, divided into many narrow segments tipped with tiny bladder-like traps.

Flowers: Flowers in clusters of 1-5 at top of scape, dark pink to purple, about 1/2 in. long, bilaterally symmetric, tubular with a short, backward-pointing spur; the corolla tube opens to 2 lips, the lower one with a yellow basal spot and divided into 3 lobes.
