Intro: Trailing, colonial perennial found in disturbed areas, especially around old house sites and cemeteries. Native of Europe.

Stems: Stems trailing over ground or scrambling over other plants, branched, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, short-petiolate, elliptic (broadest near middle), 1-2 in. long, glossy, evergreen, with a white mid-vein.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers solitary on stalks from leaf axils, blue or violet, about 1 in. wide, tubular with 5 spreading, square-tipped, pinwheel-like corolla lobes with white markings at the base.

Fruits:

Comments: Persistent and spreading from cultivation. The similar, also non-native V. major has leaves that are broadest near the base and semi-evergreen to deciduous, and larger flowers.
