Intro: Low, mat-forming perennial of moist to dry upland forests, rocky woodlands, bluffs and stream banks.

Stems: Stems creeping, runner-like rhizomes; leaves arise separately from flower stalks.

Leaves: Leaves erect; long-petiolate; divided into 3 shallowly lobed and toothed, wedge-shaped leaflets, each 1-2 in. long; semi-evergreen.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in a small cluster at the top of a separate stalk, about equal in height to the leaves; yellow; slightly more than 1/2 in. wide; consisting of 5 elliptic and round-tipped petals, 5 shorter lance-shaped sepals, and numerous stamens surrounding a green, aggregate ovary with multiple styles.

Fruits: Fruit a head of several finely hairy, tiny achenes.

Comments: The similar Geum donianum is distinguished by petals that are shorter than or equal to the sepals.
