Zizia aptera (A. Gray) Fernald var. aptera . Common name: Heartleaf Golden-Alexanders. Phenology: Apr-May; Jul-Aug. Habitat: Prairies, moist forests, forest openings, open woodlands, and woodland edges. Distribution: NY west to BC, south to GA, Panhandle FL, AR, OK, WY, and BC.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: Var. occidentalis Fernald has abroad distribution in western North America, from AB and BC south to CO, UT, and OR.

Leaves: Basal leaves petiolate, heart-shaped, 2-3 in. long, toothed, leathery and smooth; stem leaves alternate, reduced and gradually sessile upward, divided into 3 lobes or oval leaflets that are toothed.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in compound umbels, 2-3 in. wide, terminating the stem and branches, the 7-15 umbellets each having 10-20 flowers; yellow; less than 1/4 in. wide; consisting of 5 incurved petals.

Fruits: Fruit a joined pair of ridged, oval seeds.
