VA south to c. peninsular FL, west to e. TX, AR, and Mexico, and north in the interior to sc. TN (Chester, Wofford, & Kral 1997).
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: Another variety, var. saxosa (A. Gray) Zarucchi, R.L. Hartman, & Rabeler, is native to sw. United States and south into Mexico (Hartman, Rabeler, & Utech 2005).
