Elephantopus elatus Bertoloni. Common name: Southern Elephant's-foot. Phenology: Late Aug-Sep. Habitat: Pine flatwoods and longleaf pine sandhills. Distribution: E. SC south to s. FL, west to se. LA, on the Coastal Plain.

Stems: Stems branched above, hairy, with few or no leaves.
Leaves: Leaves mostly basal and in a rosette pressed flat against ground, oblong-lance-shaped with a blunt tip, to 12 in. long, toothed and hairy on both surfaces.

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) in clusters underlain by 3 hairy, green, heart-shaped bracts and held at tips of branches; heads lavender-pink, consisting of several tiny disk florets, each divided into 5 narrow corolla lobes. Narrow, very hairy bracts enclose the base of each head.
