Euthamia caroliniana (Linnaeus) Greene ex Porter & Britton. Common name: Carolina Goldentop. Phenology: (Aug) Sep-Dec. Habitat: Pine savannas, moist forests, ditches, pastures, disturbed areas. Distribution: S. MA south to s. FL and west to se. LA, mainly on the Coastal Plain, extending somewhat into the Piedmont in places (reports from farther north or farther west are based on misidentifications or on broader circumscriptions of the taxon).

Leaves: Leaves alternate, linear, 1-2 3/4 in. long, somewhat drooping but ascending and smaller upward, gland-dotted; clusters of shorter leaves often grow in axils of the primary leaves.

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) in large, branched terminal clusters; 1/3 in. wide; consisting of 7-16 short, yellow ray florets encircling a yellow center disk composed of several 5-lobed, tubular florets.
