*Ipomoea batatas (Linnaeus) Lamarck. Common name: Sweet Potato. Phenology: (Jan-) May-Oct (-Dec). Habitat: Persistent in fields after cultivation, disturbed areas. Distribution: Native of tropical America.

Origin/Endemic status: Neotropics

Taxonomy Comments: Muñoz-Rodríguez et al. (2022) discuss the origin of Ipomoea batatas as a hexaploid allopolyploid derivative derived from the ancestors of autotetraploid Ipomoea aequatoriensis T. Wells & P. Muñoz (currently an Andean endemic) and diploid Ipomoea trifida (a widespread circum-Caribbean species).
