Lobelia nuttallii Roemer & J.A. Schultes. Nuttall’s Lobelia. Phen: May-Nov. Hab: Pine flatwoods, bogs, pine savannas. Dist: NY (Long Island) south to FL Panhandle on the Coastal Plain; less commonly disjunct inland to w. NC, w. SC, KY, and TN.

Intro: Delicate, erect annual found in flatwoods, bogs and savannas.

Stems: Stems slender, simple or with ascending branches, hairy below.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, narrowly elliptic, to 1½ in. long; linear and smaller above.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in loose, narrow, terminal racemes; pale blue to whitish or lavender; less than 1 in. long; bilaterally symmetric and tubular; opening to 2 spreading lips, the upper one divided into 2 narrow, erect lobes, the lower into 3 wider lobes. The tubular calyx is bell-shaped with 5 narrow, pointed lobes.

Fruits: Fruit a rounded capsule.
