Stems stout, angled or distinctly ridged, branched above, succulent, mostly smooth.
Leaves alternate, ascending, petiolate, oval or lance-shaped, 1 1/2-8 in. long, coarsely and unevenly toothed or scalloped and mostly smooth.
Flowers solitary in axils of upper leaves, on short, erect or nodding stalks; light blue to lavender, 1-1 1/2 in. wide, trumpet-shaped with 5 shallow lobes, white inside the throat where there are 5 stamens and a single pistil. The calyx is prominently 5-lobed and 5-angled.
Fruit a round, dry berry enclosed in the persistent calyx.
