Rhynchospora odorata C. Wright ex Grisebach. Fragrant Beaksedge. Phen: Jun-Aug. Hab: Maritime swamp forests and maritime wet grasslands. Dist: E. NC south to s. FL; West Indies and Bahamas. First reported for SC by Nelson & Kelly (1997).

ID notes: Rhynchospora odorata is tall (1-2 meters), and the stem is thick at the base. The inflorescence is elongate and arched, with the female scales having a rusty color. It is easily mistaken for R. caduca, but R. odorata differs from that species by its longer achenes (5-7 mm vs. 3-5 mm) and a longer stalk at the base of the achene (0.3-0.6 mm vs. 0.15-0.3 mm).
