Stems: Flowering scapes and leaves arising from an underground stem and mostly held above water surface.
Leaves: Leaves clustered basally and of two types: linear to narrowly lance-shaped ones on petioles and up to 7 in. long are both submerged and above water; narrower, grass-like leaves up to 14 in. long are above water.

Flowers: Flowers in 1-10 whorls of 3 flowers each along an erect scape, male and female flowers separate; white; 1/2-1 in. wide; consisting of 3 spreading, rounded petals and the male flowers (above) with bushy yellow stamens and female flowers (below) with a mounded, green compound ovary.
Fruits: Fruit a brown, compact cluster of achenes.
