Silene antirrhina Linnaeus. Common name: Sleepy Catchfly, Garter-pink. Phenology: Apr-Jul. Habitat: Dry, open woodlands, fields, disturbed areas. Distribution: Nearly throughout North America, south to c. peninsular FL, and in Mexico (BCN, CHH, COA, SON, TAM) and South America; introduced in Europe.

Stems: Stems branched, hairy and with dark, sticky bands beneath upper leaf nodes.
Leaves: Leaves opposite, sessile and ascending, lance-shaped, 1-3 in. long.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers solitary or in sparse clusters at ends of branches; white to pink or lavender; 1/4-3/8 in. wide; consisting of 5 spreading, deeply notched petals emerging from the narrow end of an inflated, ribbed, calyx tube.
Fruits: Fruit an oval capsule encased in the dry, inflated calyx tube.
Comments: Flowers open in sunshine and close near evening.
Height: 8-30 in.
