Rhynchospora microcephala (Britton) Britton ex Small. Small-headed Beaksedge. Phen: Jul-Oct. Hab: Pine savannas, longleaf pine sandhill-pocosin ecotones. Dist: S. NJ south to s. FL and west to MS; Cuba.
ID notes:The small and generally spherical heads of Rhynchospora microcephala are an excellent field character; the chestnut to brown heads are 2-5 and are well-separated. R. cephalantha is closely similar, but it has larger heads and the seeds are larger (3.5-4 mm long vs. 2.5-3 mm long in R. microcephala).
