Isotrema macrophyllum (Lamarck) C.F. Reed. Common name: Pipevine, Dutchman's-pipe. Phenology: May-Jun; Aug-Sep. Habitat: Cove forests and other mesic mountain forests. Distribution: A southern-central Appalachian endemic: sw. PA to c. TN and n. GA and ne. AL (Keener et al. 2024).

Height: 6-30 ft.

plant sale text: Pipevine is a beautiful, lesser-known southeastern native woodland vine. The leaves of a mature plant are often at least six inches in width. This vine climbs by twining and can provide excellent screening from early summer until frost. One inch maroon flowers appear in early summer. Their shape is the reason for another common name used for this species: Dutchman's pipe. This species is the primary food source for caterpillars of the Pipevine swallowtail butterfly.
