Batis maritima Linnaeus. Saltwort, Beachwort, Batis, Turtleweed, Vidrillos. Phen: Jun-Aug; Oct. Hab: Brackish or salt marshes, "Batis flats", other salt flats, mangroves. Dist: Se. SC south to s. FL, west to TX, and in Central and South America; West Indies; HI (where apparently introduced). B. maritima is alleged (as by FNA and S) to occur as far north as NC, but the documentation is unknown; there is no twentieth century evidence to place Batis in NC.
