*Brassica napus Linnaeus. Rutabaga, Rape, Canola, Colza, Swede. Phen: May-Jul. Hab: Fields, disturbed areas. Dist: Native of Eurasia.

Origin/Endemic status: Eurasia

Taxonomy Comments: This species is apparently a recently derived polyploid (n=19) of B. oleracea (n=9) and B. rapa (n=10).

Other Comments: The seeds of this species are the source of ‘canola’ oil, the name coined by marketers from ‘Canadian’ + ‘oil’+ ‘low’ + ‘acid’ to avoid the negative connotation of the ancient name ‘rape’.
