Hydrophyllum canadense Linnaeus. Common name: Mapleleaf Waterleaf, Canada Waterleaf, Broadleaf Waterleaf. Phenology: May-Aug; Aug-Sep. Habitat: Cove forests, rocky streambanks, other moist and nutrient-rich forests. Distribution: VT and s. ON west to MI and WI, south to n. GA, AL, ne. AR (?), and MO.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Synonymy : = C, F, G, Il, K4, Mi, Mo2, NE, NY, Pa, RAB, S, Tat, Tn, Va, W, WV, Beckmann (1979), Constance (1942). Basionym: Hydrophyllum canadense L. 1759

Intro: Erect-spreading, rhizomatous perennial of cove hardwood forests, rocky stream banks,other moist and nutrient-rich forests and seepy limestone cliffs.

Stems: Stems branching, smooth or slightly hairy.

Leaves: Stem leaves alternate, long-petiolate, palmately divided into 5-9 lobes, toothed and sparsely hairy; basal leaves (overwinter and die back in spring) elongated in comparison, pinnately divided and with silvery-white blotches.

Flowers: Flowers in 1-3 branching, terminal clusters; white to pale pinkish-purple, to 1/2 in. long, bell-shaped, consisting of 5 corolla lobes and fringe-like appendages between them, a 5-parted calyx and 5 prominently long stamens.
