Hydrophyllum macrophyllum Nuttall. Common name: Hairy Waterleaf. Phenology: May-Jun; Jul-Aug. Habitat: Cove forests and other moist rocky forests, especially over calcareous or mafic rocks. Distribution: WV west to OH, and IL, south to sw. VA, w. NC, n. GA, and n. AL; disjunct in the lower Piedmont of SC (Kershaw County; L.L. Gaddy, pers. comm. 2013).
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: Reports from AR are erroneous, and are based on material of Hydrophyllum brownei Kral & Bates (Peck 2003). The w. North American H. occidentale (S. Watson) A. Gray is rather closely related.

Leaves: Leaves petiolate, elliptic to oblong, to 6 in. long, pinnately divided into 7-13 toothed segments, blotched with grayish-white when young (resembles a water stain) and slightly hairy.

Flowers: Flowers in 2-3 floppy, terminal clusters, the branches and stalks covered with long hairs; usually white; 3/4 in. wide (fully open); bell-shaped, the corolla divided into 5 spreading lobes and the hairy calyx divided into 5 triangular lobes.
