Gaylussacia tomentosa (A. Gray) Pursh ex Small. Common name: Hairy Dangleberry. Phenology: Mar-May; Jun-Aug. Habitat: Pine flatwoods, longleaf pine sandhills, xeric coastal fringe sandhills, pocosin ecotones, pine savannas. Distribution: Se. and ec.SC (Charleston, Dorchester, and Barnwell counties southward) south to c. peninsular FL, west to s. GA and sw. AL.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: As discussed by Godfrey (1988) and Duncan & Brittain (1966), better treated as a species than as a variety of G. frondosa. G. tomentosa has a tetraploid chromosome complement (n=24), compared to diploid for G. nana and G. frondosa (n=12) (Luteyn et al. 1996). See Sorrie (2017a) for additional information on the identification of this species and G. nana.
