Gentiana villosa Linnaeus. Section: Pneumonanthe. Common name: Striped Gentian. Phenology: Late Aug-Nov. Habitat: Upland forests, sandhill/pocosin ecotones. Distribution: Se. PA west to n. KY and w. TN, south to Panhandle FL and e. LA.

Intro: Erect, sometimes clumped perennial of upland forests and sandhill/pocosin ecotones.

Stems: Stems 1-several from a single crown, unbranched, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, sessile to short-petiolate, elliptic to oblong-lance-shaped, to 4 in. long, glossy and smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers 2-several in leafy, compact terminal cluster; greenish- or yellowish-white tinged or striped with purple; 1-2 in. long; tubular, with 5 triangular lobes that are erect or closed over the opening. A green, cup-shaped calyx with 5 irregular, linear lobes surrounds the base of each flower.

Fruits: Fruit an ellipsoid to oblong capsule.
