Trillium pusillum Michaux var. monticulum Bodkin & Reveal. Subgenus: Delostylis. Appalachian Least Trillium. Hab: Dry to dry-mesic forests and woodlands, moist forests along small mountain streams. Dist: Endemic to nw. VA, e. WV, and w. MD.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: Var. monticulum Bodkin & Reveal has been controversial; see Cabe (1995) and Cabe & Werth (1995) for additional discussion of variation within T. pusillum in Virginia and elsewhere. The epithet was spelled "monticulum", and is not 'correctable' to "monticola"; "the substantive suffix '-culum' is used as a diminutive with third declension nouns like 'mons', and is not the same as the suffix '-cola' " (M. Schori, pers.comm., 2002).

Other Comments: Petals white to pink.

Synonymy: = K4, Bodkin & Reveal (1982); = Trillium monticola, in prep., sp. nov.; = Trillium pusillum Michx. var. monticola Bodkin & Reveal – Case & Case (1997), orthographic variant; < Trillium pusillum Michx. – S, S13, Patrick (1986), Timmerman-Erskine, Dute, & Boyd (2002); < Trillium pusillum Michx. var. pusillum – FNA26; < Trillium pusillum Michx. var. virginianum Fernald – C, K1, K3, Va
