*Lamium purpureum Linnaeus. Common name: Purple Archangel, Red Dead-nettle, Purple Dead-nettle. Phenology: (Jan)-Mar-Oct. Habitat: Lawns, fields, roadsides, disturbed areas, pastures. Distribution: Native of Eurasia. Only recently documented in the Coastal Plain of GA and in FL (Carter, Baker, & Morris 2009; Wunderlin & Hansen 2008).

Origin/Endemic status: Eurasia

Intro: Sprawling to weakly erect annual of lawns, fields, roadsides, disturbed areas and pastures. Native of Eurasia.

Stems: Stems 4-angled, hollow, sprawling at the base but erect above, often branched at the base and slightly hairy.

Leaves: Leaves opposite; lower leaves long-petioled, the pairs widely separated, round, to 2 in. long and bluntly toothed; upper leaves short-petioled, crowded, drooping, smaller, triangular and purplish; all leaves bristly-hairy.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers clustered in upper axillary whorls of 3-6, each whorl underlain by leaf-like bracts; pink to purple; about 1/2 in. long; tubular and split into 2 lips, the upper one hooded and hairy and the lower lobed, paler and speckled with purple. The tubular-bell-shaped calyx has 5 teeth.
