Taxonomy Comments: Although most taxonomists have followed Russell (1965) in treating Viola stoneana House as a hybrid, studies have shown it to be distinct, fully fertile, and inhabiting a quite different rich mesic forest habitat with a regionally endemic distribution; it is treated separately here.
