*Centaurea jacea Linnaeus. Brown Knapweed. Phen: Jun-Sep. Hab: Roadsides, disturbed areas. Dist: Native of Europe. This species is increasing rapidly in the VA Ridge and Valley. Reported for Alleghany County, NC (Poindexter, Weakley, & Denslow 2011).
