Doellingeria infirma (Michaux) E. Greene. Common name: Appalachian Flat-topped White Aster, Cornel-leaf Flat-topped Aster. Phenology: Late Jun-Sep. Habitat: Woodland borders, dry or dry-mesic woodlands, glades. Distribution: MA west to KY, south to SC, GA, Panhandle FL (Gadsden County), AL, and wc. TN.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Stems: Stems solitary or several from a woody crown, slender, slightly zig-zagged, mostly smooth.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, mostly sessile, elliptic with somewhat pointed tips, to 5 in. long (lower leaves smaller), smooth to rough above.

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) in a widely branched, terminal cluster; heads to 1 in. wide and consisting of 5-9 well-spaced white ray florets encircling a center disk of pale yellow tubular flowers. Several series of green, narrow bracts surround the cup-shaped base of each head.
