not marked as a favorite taxon Juglans cinerea Linnaeus. Common name: Butternut, White Walnut. Phenology: Apr-May; Oct. Habitat: Moist, nutrient-rich forests. Distribution: NB west to MN, south to n. GA and AR.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Other Comments: This tree, formerly common, is afflicted with butternut canker disease, which now threatens its continued existence. This species readily hybridizes with J. ailantifolia and apparently less so with J. regia (Ross-Davis et al. 2008). See Woeste et al. (2009) for more details on identification of hybrids.
