Helianthus smithiorum Heiser. Smith's Sunflower. Phen: Aug-Sep. Hab: Dry forests and woodlands. Dist: Known from n. GA, e. AL, and se. TN.

ID notes:H. smithiorum has small heads (like H. microcephalus, H. laevigatus, H. schweinitzii), the leaves narrowly lanceolate and subsessile (like H. schweinitzii or H. laevigatus), the leaves resin-dotted below (like H. microcephalus), but nearly glabrous. It may be a hybrid derivative of H. microcephalus and H. strumosus.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: The epithet must be corrected to "smithiorum", as Heiser intended it to commemorate two Smiths.
