Krigia dandelion (Linnaeus) Nuttall. Common name: Colonial Dwarf-dandelion, Potato-dandelion. Phenology: Apr-May (-Jun). Habitat: Woodlands, roadsides, wet prairies, low damp meadows, disturbed areas. Distribution: NJ, IL, and KA, south to Panhandle FL and ne. TX.

Intro: Erect perennial from fibrous roots with nodules, found in rocky woodlands and barrens, moist to dry-moist forests, roadsides and other disturbed areas.

Stems: Stems consist of mostly leafless flowering stalk(s) arising from a basal rosette; they are smooth and with a whitish coating, sometimes tinged with red, oozing milky sap when broken.

Leaves: Leaves basal, long-spoons-shaped to linear-lance-shaped with gradually narrowed base, 1-6 in. long, with margins entire, lobed or toothed; smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) solitary at tip of stem, about 1 in. wide, consisting of multiple orange-yellow ray florets with squared-off, 5-toothed tips. A single series of narrow, green to blue-green bracts that bend outward with age surround the bell-shaped base of each head.

Fruits: Fruit a fluffy cluster of tufted achenes.
