Sericocarpus

Sericocarpus tortifolius (Michaux) Nees. Common name: Twisted-leaf White-topped Aster. Phenology: Aug-Nov. Habitat: Dry to mesic longleaf pine sandhills, mesic to scrubby flatwoods, other dry woodlands. Distribution: E. NC south to s. FL, west to e. LA (Florida parishes), more or less restricted to the Coastal Plain, but inland onto hard-rock provinces in nc. GA and nc. AL.

Stems: Stems slightly woody, branched above, hairy.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, mostly sessile, oval, rough-hairy and slightly sticky-resinous; many leaves are twisted at the base, resulting in an orientation perpendicular to the ground.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) in a flat-topped, branching terminal cluster; heads about 1/2 in. wide, consisting of 2-5 white ray florets encircling a center disk of 6-11 tiny, dull white, tubular florets. Several series of tiny, green-tipped whitish bracts enclose the cylindric base of each head.
