Aristolochia Linnaeus. Birthwort.

Key to Aristolochia

A genus of about 300 species, herbs and vines, once Endodeca, Isotrema, and Pararistolochia are excluded (Huber in Kubitzki 1993). Recent work has clarified that Aristolochia s.l. comprises 4 main clades, each of which is distinctive molecularly, morphologically, and in karyotype. These can be (as here) recognized as genera, or alternatively as four subgenera, grouped into two genera (Aristolochia including Pararistolochia, and Isotrema including Endodeca), as suggested by Ohi-Toma et al. (2006).
