Gossypium Linnaeus. Subfamily: Malvoideae. Cotton.
A genus of about 40-50 species, herbs, shrubs, and trees, of warm temperate to tropical areas.
ID notes: Agricultural cotton is now a complex set of cultivars, some involving cross-breeding between Gossypium barbadense and Gossypium hirsutum, and some plants may not be readily identifiable to species.
