Key to Lolium

A genus of about 8-10 species, annuals and perennials, native to Europe, n. Africa, and temperate Asia. Here interpreted to include Schedonorus, following Soreng et al. (2015); perhaps the two together are best included in an even-more expanded Festuca. The best generic placement of Schedonorus arundinaceus (= Festuca elatior; = Festuca arundinacea; = Lolium arundinaceum) and S. pratense has been much disputed. Articles and floras continue to place them variously in three genera: Festuca (Aiken et al. 1997; Baldwin et al. 2012, Mohlenbrock 2014), Lolium (Darbyshire 1993; Soreng et al. 2015), and Schedonorus (Soreng & Terrell 1998).
