Panax Linnaeus. Ginseng.
A genus of ca. 14 species, perennial herbs, 16 of e. Asia and 1 of e. North America (Plunkett et al. 2018b; Haines 2020a). Wen & Zimmer (1996) and Choi & Wen (2000) studied the phylogeny of Panax using molecular techniques. P. trifolius does not appear to be closely related to any of the other species, and is a basal component of the genus -- or separable as a monotypic genus, Nanopanax (Haines 2020a), as here done. P. quinquefolius is most closely related to P. ginseng C.A. Meyer and P. japonicus C.A. Meyer.
