Tiarella Linnaeus. Foamflower.

Key to Tiarella

A genus of 3-6 species, perennial herbs, of temperate North America and e. Asia. The taxonomy of eastern North American Tiarella has been controversial, ranging from the recognition of a single, variable species (T. cordifolia s.l.) to recognition of 2-5 taxa at various ranks (species, subspecies, and varieties). We here follow Nesom (2021a) as finally presenting a comprehensive and modern view of taxa and ranks, and based on field studies and the much greater accumulation of available herbarium specimens that have accrued since Lakela (1937), Wherry (1940, 1949), and Fernald (1943, 1950). Additionally, Nesom's (2021a) analysis demonstrates that the typic component of Tiarella cordifolia must represent the non-stoloniferous taxon present in eastern Virginia, contrary to the misapplication by previous authors.
