Xerophyllum Michaux. Turkeybeard, Beargrass.

A genus of 2 species, rather woody herbs of temperate North America. The other species in the genus is X. tenax (Pursh) Nuttall, distributed from AB, BC, and s. AK south to nw. WY, ID, and CA.

ID notes:Sterile plants resemble tussocks of a bunchgrass, but the leaf bases are white and flattened and are obviously not those of a grass. The leaves remain (gray-) green throughout the winter.
